FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE STRUCTURE FIRE AND THE HEAT

During one of the hotest days in several years the volunteers from Clayton Assisted by an Engine, Ladder and Tanker from Smyrna, Engine and Tanker from Hartly, Engine and Rescue from Millington Md., Ambulance 64 and KM6 were dispatched at 17:15 for the Non-Dwelling Structure Fire at 3066 Blackistons Road.   Responding units had no problem locating the fire as a header was visible as soon as they made it out of town.  Command 45 w/ Assistant Chief Jeff Lightcap arrived to find a 15' x 30' "generator building" involved with exposures to two chicken house and a fuel tank.  Engine 45-2 w/5, Captain Jonathan Burnett arrived behind the chief established a water supply and stretch the 300' line.  Tanker 44 and Engine 45-3 w/5, Past Chief Wes Davis arrived together with Tanker 44 picking up 45-2's supply line and the crew from 45-3 checking the exposures for extension.  Additional crews from Rescue 45 W/4, Firefighter Kevin Crews, Ladder 44, Engine 44-3, Engine 51-2 and Tanker 51 arrived and assisted with overhaul.  At the time of the fire the temperature was 98 degrees with the heat index at 116.  Crews were rotated out every 15 minutes while overhaul was completed and sent to rehab that was handled by Ambulance 64.  KCMD E2 was redirected to cover Sta 45 but was later called to the scene to assit crews with getting the apparatus back in service.  Damage was confined to the original building which was destroyed.  The fire is being investigated by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office.  Assistance Chief Lightcap had the command.  Photo's courtesy Jeff Lightcap.  Units responding; Command 45, Engines 45-2,45-3,44-3,51-2,KCMD E2, Ladder 44, Tankers 44 & 51, Rescues 45 & KCMD R2, B-64, KM6, FM-15 (Sipple), Sta 45 & 44 Fire Police.
