Reported building collapse Main Street

Sunday afternoon at 12:31 the station along with the Kent County Special Ops Team (Stations 43, 51, 53)and EMS units from Ambulance 64, Kent County Paramedics and Delaware State Police Aviation were dispatched for a reported building collapse at 401 Main Street in Clayton.  Command 45 w/ Assistant Chief Robbie Johnson and Rescue 45 w/5, arrived within minutes to find a 2 story mixed occupancy with a commercial on the first floor and apartments on the second with structural damage.   A/C Johnson established Clayton Command.  They were followed shortly by Quint 45 w/4, Past Chief Jeff Lightcap and Engines 45-3 w/6, Capt Craig Snyder and 45-4 w/6, Lt. Jack Davis.  Crews began an exterior inspection of the building, started securing utilities to the building and established a safety zone around the building.  The crew from Rescue 45 and Quint 45 made access to the second floor and assisted several civilians who were egress challenged who could not exit due to their door being jammed, they were uninjured.  Special Ops units and members arrived and completed an assessment of the structure and found a failure of the truss roof system that had caused the pitched roof to collapse and was pushing the exterior walls out.  Additional resources were requested to the scene to assist with utilities, inspection, and traffic control.  Along with residence that were evacuated from 401 Main Street a residence next door at 403 Main Street and a residence at the rear of the building a 101 Clayton Ave. were evacuated as a safety precaution.  There were no injuries during the incident.  Fire units remained on the scene for almost 2 hours when the scene was turned over to Clayton PD for security until Monday morning when additional inspections will be completed.  The American Red Cross is assisting the families displaced by the incident.  Clayton had 38 members respond to the alarm.   Clayton would also like to thank all those agencies that assisted during the incident.  Citizens Hose Company covered Claytons first due during the incident.   Photo's courtesy Joe Jones, Gene Shaner from Sta 45.  Units and agencies responding Command 45, Engines 45-3, 45-4, Rescue 45, Quint 45, Special Ops 43-1, Utility 43 w/Special Ops Trailer,  Rescue 51, Light/Air 51, Utility 53 w/Special Ops Trailer, Utility 40, Ambulances B & D 64, KM9, KM5, Trooper 4, Clayton PD, Town of Clayton Public Works & Inspections, DELDOT, Chesapeake Utilities, Red Cross, Verizon
