Sunday afternoon at 1:16 pm the station was dispatched as part of the first alarm assignment for a working residential structure fire in the 500 Block of West Commerce Street in Smyrna. Quint 45 w/6, Captain Jonathan Burrett and Engine 45-2 w/5, Chief Wes Davis arrived to find Smyrna Engine 44-2 on scene with a line stretched on a 2 story single family residence with heavy smoke showing. The crew from Quint 45 split their crew with half doing the primary search and opened up for the engine companies while the other half placed a second hand line in service, the driver went to the roof to ventilate. Crews encountered heavy fire in a couple rooms on the second floor. The crew from 45-2 established a second water source and split their crew with the interior crew assisting initial attack crews and the other half began throwing ground ladders. Crews made quick work of the fire, searches came up negative, however one resident who was escorted from te residence prior to arrival of the fire department received burns to the face and was transported to Bay Health Medical in Dover in critical condition. One Clayton Firemen was transported to Smyrna Clayton ER with a leg injury and was treated and released. The residence received substantial damage to the second floor. Rescue 45 w/8, Assistant Chief John Pridemore and Squad 53 responded later into the fire with additional manpower to assist with overhaul. The Delaware State Fire Marshals Office was on scene and investigating. Chief Francis Hartnett (44-15) had the command.
