Friday morning at 03:21am the station along with Engine 26 and KCM Tanker 2 were alerted for the unknown structure fire in the 1600 block of Harvey Straughn Road. Just prior to arrival Kent Center advised responding units that a firefighter from Station 26 that lives in the area was on scene reporting a 30' x 40' barn involved. Command 45 w/Assistant Chief Jeff Lightcap and Engine 45-2 w/5, Captain Jack Davis arrived together, the crew from 45-2 stretched the attack line. Quint 45 w/3, Deputy Chief Alex Carrow and Squad 26 w/Chief Rickie Clark arrived together and those crews placed a second line in service. Squad 26 and KCM Tanker 2 w/Lt. Jesse Downey Jr. established a water supply to 45-2. Crews were able to make quick work of the fire. Engine 45-3 w/4, Captain Jonathon Burnett and Rescue 45 w/2 Assistant Chief John Pridemore arrived and assisted with overhaul. Command reduced the assignment to Station 45 units, Squad 26 and KCM Tanker 2. The fire destroyed the barn killing several farm animals. The Delaware State Fire Marshals Office investigated and determined the cause to be a heat lamp in the barn. Assistant Chief Lightcap had the Command.
