Saturday December 16th was the company's yearly Appreciation Banquet. As every year we have companies stand by for us to cover our fire disrict while our members enjoy the night off. This year a crew from Harrington Fire Co. staffed Engine 45 and the Command Buggy, a crew from the Hartly Vol. Fire Co. staffed Squad 45 and a couple members from New Castle County staffed Tower 45. Just after 7pm, after finishing dinner, the station was alerted for the Engine and Tower as part of the 2nd Alarm to assist the Volunteer Hose Co. of Middletown with a large structure fire. First Alarm companies arrived to find a 2 story 60' by 600' Egg Processing Facility with heavy fire throughout. Engine 45 w/6, Tower 45 w/3 and the Command Buggy w/5015 (Chief Brode) arrived and were immediatley put to work. The crews from both trucks assisted crews with attempting to keep the fire from extending to exposures while the crew from Tower 45 placed their master stream in service. Chief Brode asisted at the Command Post during the incident. The fire eventually went to 3 Alarms with several Tanker Task Forces responding also. Crews work for several hours to bring the fire under control. The fire did an estimated 1 million dollars in damge and is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office. The Engine, Tower and Command Buggy returned to Station 45 at 01:30am where they stayed until 7am to complete the cover up. While the units were committed in Middletown the crew from Hartly on Squad 45 and a made up crew from Clayton on Rescue 45 covered the district. The Officers and Members of Clayton would like to thank the members from Harrington, Hartly and those from NCC for protecting our first due while our members enjoyed the night off.
