Wednesday afternoon at 1:19pm volunteers from Clayton and surrounding companies responded to a large field fire in the 4500 Block of Millington Road west of Clayton. Crews arrived find a cut and standing barley field on fire and spreading rapidly due to dry and windy conditions. The fire eventually burned numerious acres of field and spread into a wooded area. The fire took 2 hours to bring the fire under control and several additional hours to extinquish. At one point the fire was burning towards and threatened homes in the Kentcourne development. The Delaware State Forestry Service responded and remained on scene into the evening, after volunteer companies cleared, dealing with hot spots in the woods and returned on the next day to continue extinquishing spot fires. Companies responding to the fire were Clayton (45), Smyrna (44), Hartly (51), Marydel (56), Townsend (26), Millington Md (2), Galena Md (3), Delaware State Forestry Service, American Legion Ambulance (64), Delaware State Fire School. There were no reported injuries. Clayton Chief Austin Moorhead had the Clayton Command. The Leipsic (53) and Little Creek (54) Fire Companies covered the Smyrna/Clayton area from Sta 44 while a Tanker from Sudlersville covered the Hartly/Marydel ara from Sta 51. Upon returning to quarters around 1600hrs several of these same companies on this fire responded to assist Townsend (26) on another large field fire at Gum Bush Rd & Deer Run Rd. that took several hours to bring under control.
