FIRST DUE HOUSE FIRE GOES TO THE EQUIVALENT TO 4 ALARMS
Monday, March 10, 2025

Monday afternoon at about 2:30pm the station along with several mutual aid companies responded to a working house in the 100 block of Pom Run Drive in Clayton.  The fire which was originally reported as an outside fire went to the equivalent of 4 alarms.  After dispatch as an outside fire Squad 45 w/4, Crewleader Lucas arrived and reported a 2 story single family dwelling with heavy fire showing on the B side of the house and requested the upgrade to a working fire.  Chief Moorhead arrived just after the squad requested the 2nd alarm bringing additional resources.  The crew from Squad 45 established a water supply from Duck Creek Rd and stretched a handline.  Tower 45 w/4, DC Carrow, Rescue 45 w/4, Safety Oficer Darling, Engine 44-3, Brush 45 w/2, FF Tay Johnson and additional equipment arrived behind the chief and assited with placed additional handlines in service and assisted with making access to the interior and opening up for the engine companies.  Crews made several attempts to make access to the interior and the second floor but were unable to because of extreme hoarding conditions in the residence.  Unable to make access to the upper floors crews were pulled from the structure and Tower Ladder 45 was placed in service for its master stream.  After the bulk of the fire was knocked down crews were able to make access into the structure.  Crews worked for about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control and worked for several hours after that to overhaul.  Water was supplied to the scene via a tanker shuttle and a 5" supply line laid to a hydrant at Smyrna High School about 800' away.  The fire was very labor intensive due to the amount of fire but mostly because to the extreme hoarding conditions crews were rotated throughout the fire.  There was heavy fire damage to the structure.  There were no injuries reported and the fire is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office.  Lietenuant Mike Wynne had the Clayton Command.  Units responding Command 45, Engines 44-3, 43-3, E-26, E-46-2, QAC E-64, Squads 45, 26, 51, 53, 46-1, Towers 45, 27, 54, Rescues 45, 44, 51, 26, 43, Tankers 44, 24, 53, 54, Brush 45, Air 27, EMS Units C-64, KM6, KM5, Fire Marshal FM-5 (Schad).  Photo's courtesy Gene Shaner and Amber Moorhead.
