LARGE WOODS FIRE KEEPS COMPANY AND MUTUAL AID DEPARTMENTS BUSY

Thursday evening March 20th at 5:35pm the station was dispatched for the unknown fire in the 2400 block of Clayton Delaney Rd. Brush 45 w/3, Squad 45 w/6 Fire Gator 45 w/2 and Chief Moorhead made the response.  Clayton crews arrive to find a heavy smoke condition in the area but were unable to immediately locate the fire in a heavily wooded area.  The crew from Brush 45 was able to go on foot and was able to finally locate a large area of woods on fire about a 1/4 mile off the roadway.  With access limited to ATV's and on foot additional resources were called from the Citizens Hose of Smyrna, Townsend Fire Co., Hartly Fire Co., Dover Fire Dept, Marydel Fire Dept and the Delaware Forestry Service.  It took crews about 90 minutes to contain the fire and not before a thunderstorm dropped heavy rain on the area helping firefighters.  The remaining fire and trees that had burnt inside the perimeter were left to burn themselves out.  The forestry department was schedued to return the back out the next day to finish extinquishing the remaining fire.  The fire burned approximately 25 acres of woods.  Crewleader Jake Lucas had the Clayton Command.  Units responding;  Chief Moorhead, Brush 45, 44-0, 26-0, 26-1, Squad 45, Engine 56-1, Tanker 26, ATV's 45, 26, 46, 51, 56, Utility 46, 51.
