The Clayton Fire Company regrets to announce the passing of J. Benjamin ( Ben) Roy, Jr. Ben joined the Clayton Fire Company in 1963 and served as president from 1973 to 1975. Ben was a very active leader in Clayton and was a driving force in being the best. Ben first was a member of the Cheswold Fire Company prior to moving to Clayton. Ben joined the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office in 1961 as a deputy fire marshal after working in the family business, Ben was then appointed as the first fire protection enginner for the state in 1971. In 1974 Ben was appointed by Governor Tribbett as the third person to serve as State Fire Marshal and served until his retirement in 1991. Ben holds the distinction as being the longest serving state fire marshal. Upon retiring from the FMO Ben worked as a regional representitive for the NPFA for several years. Ben will be missed by all of his fire service family. No services are scheduled at this time, Ben will be cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled after the COVID-19 Pandemic has been declared over.
