TOM WISDO IS AWARDED THE ROBERT G. BERGHORN AWARD AS THE FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR
Saturday, December 20, 2025

During the annual banquet firefighter Tom Wisdo was awarded the Robert G. Berghorn Award by Fire Chief Austin Moorhead as the Clayton Firefighter of the Year. Tom a newer member of the department was awarded this award for his dedication to training and responding to alarms during 2025. The award is named after Past Chief and President Robert G. Berghorn who when he passed was the longest serving member of the Clayton Fire Company. Below you can read Chief Moorhead’s speach:

Good evening, everyone—distinguished guests, members of the Clayton Fire Company, families, friends, and members of our community.

Tonight, we gather to recognize an individual who truly represents the very best of the fire service: courage, commitment, humility, and service above self.

Being a member of this company is more than answering alarms. It means sacrificing time with family, stepping forward when others step back, and showing up—day after day—ready to serve, no matter the circumstances. The recipient embodies all of that and more.

He is the kind of firefighter every department hopes for. He leads not by title, but by example. Whether it’s responding to emergencies, mentoring newer members, maintaining equipment, or lending a hand wherever it’s needed, he consistently goes above and beyond without ever asking for recognition. His dedication to training, safety, and teamwork has made a lasting impact on this department and the community we serve.

When the tones drop, He is someone you want beside you—calm under pressure, dependable in every situation, and always focused on the mission and the safety of others. His professionalism and steady presence inspire confidence, not only among fellow firefighters, but also among the citizens who rely on us in their most difficult moments.

But just as important as what he does on the fireground is who he is off of it. He represents Clayton Fire Company with pride and integrity, and he reminds us all why volunteer service still matters so deeply. His commitment reflects a genuine love for this department and for the community we call home.

This award is a small way of saying thank you—for the long hours, the dedication, the leadership, and the countless sacrifices that often go unseen. You have set a standard that strengthens this department and inspires those around you.

On behalf of the Clayton Fire Company, our community, and your fellow firefighters, congratulations, Tom Wisdo, on being named Firefighter of the Year. This honor is well deserved.
