TOWER, ENGINE AND RESCUE GO TO SMYRNA FOR GARAGE FIRE

Monday evening just prior to the start of our training night the station was alerted along with Ambulance 64 and Kent County Paramedics to assist Station 44 on the garage fire in the 100 blk of North Union St. in Smyrna.  With crews in the station Engine 45 w/6, Deputy Chief Jeff Lightcap and Tower 45 w/6 Asst Chief Alex Carrow made the response in under a minute.  Both units arrived with Smyrna units to find a 20'x40' 2 story detached garage with fire showing.  The engine companies went to work securing a water supply and placing 2 handlines in service while the Special Services searched, ventilated and opened up for the engine companies.  Later into the fire Rescue 45 w/8, Crewleader Gilbert McClements made the response.  The fire was quickly brought under control.  The fire is being investigated by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office.  Captain Isaac Hankins (44-18) had the command.  Units responding; 44-9, Engines 44-2, 44-3, Engine 45, Rescue 44, Rescue 45, Tower 45, D-64, KM-6, FM-28 (Brode).     

While units were overhauling the garage fire Squad 45 w/6, FF Amber Moorhead, Rescue 45, Engine 44-3 and Squad 53 ( who was covering both the 44 and 45 fire districts) responded to a reported gas leak at 64 Dump Road in Clayton.  Units arrived to find a leaking propane storage tank which was secured until the arrival of the gas company.
