Sunday, November 17, 2024

The Kent County Fire/EMS Dispatch which is also known as Kent Center is celebrating it's 50th year of existence in 2024.  Formed in 1974 by the Kent County Levy Court to bring 17 Kent County fire companies and the EMS system under one roof.  The original staff was made up of 2 dispatchers per shift with a manager to over see them and operated out of the basement in the Old Courthouse in Downtown Dover.  In 1984 a decission was made to combine Fire/EMS and Police under one roof and 911 in Kent County was born.  The 911 center remained in Downtown Dover until moving into its current facility at 911 Public Safety Blvd in 1998.  Today Kent Center is staffed by 5 to 6 dispatchers per shift.  Along with Kentcom/Recom police operation who shares the same room with Kent Center they handle over 200,000 calls for service each year.  On Sunday November 17, 2024 a celebration was held to recognize the 50th Anniversary of Kent Center.  Current and retired disptchers, management, support staff, representatives from area fire departments and elected officals helped recognize the event at a program held at the Cheswold Vol. Fire Co.  Our President Whalen attended the event to represent the company.
